In May 2014, through a liaison nurse at Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), we learn about a mother who recently arrived from Brazil. She arrived to support her son Yuri, 27, who suffers from a tumor. Both are in an irregular situation in Switzerland. Yuri’s mother expresses all her gratitude towards Switzerland and its healthcare system because all the measures to save her son’s life were undertaken quickly. This mother needed a helping hand in order to afford the daily bus ride to see her hospitalized son. The Frédéric Fellay Association, touched by this encounter, immediately accepted to offer her monthly bus passes. Two months after this meeting, a friend of the mother contacts us as Yuri has left us. The mother is looking everywhere for aid in order to repatriate her son’s body to Brazil to be close to their family. The search for funds proved to be extremely difficult. The Frédéric Fellay Association took the decision to contribute over 50% of the missing costs for Yuri’s repatriation. Their return to Brazil was possible on the same flight. The family was present upon their arrival to welcome them.
